01 · How it works

From one goal to everyone’s objectives in three steps

01

Describe your goal

Type the outcome you want in plain English, and pick a niche if it belongs to one function.

02

We find the level

The builder works out whether it is a company, department or team goal, and who should own each part.

03

Get the cascade

Aligned team objectives with key results, and personal objectives by role, all with measures, targets and dates.

02 · Goal levels

Company, department and team goals

Cascading works the same way at every level: the goal at the top is broken into objectives for the people who deliver it. What changes is who owns each layer.

Company goal

Owned by
The leadership team
Cascades to
Department objectives, then personal objectives
Example
“Grow revenue to £10m and expand into two new markets by Q4.”

Department goal

Owned by
One function, such as sales or HR
Cascades to
Team or quarterly objectives, then personal objectives
Example
“Deliver £1m of new sales this year.”

Team goal

Owned by
A single team or squad
Cascades to
Workstreams, then personal objectives
Example
“Launch the new onboarding flow and lift activation by 25%.”
03 · The basics

What are cascading objectives?

Cascading objectives connect strategy to day-to-day work. A top-level objective is broken into objectives for the teams that deliver it, and each of those is broken into personal objectives. Everyone can see how their work contributes, managers can spot gaps early, and progress rolls up automatically.

  1. Start with the outcome. “Reduce churn to 5%”, not “send more onboarding emails”.
  2. Make every layer measurable. Each objective needs a measure, a target and a due date.
  3. Check the numbers add up. Team targets should deliver the top target; personal targets should deliver the team’s.
  4. Agree, don’t just assign. Agree personal objectives in a one-to-one so people own them.
  5. Review regularly. Monthly check-ins keep the cascade honest; re-cascade when priorities change.

FAQ

Cascading objectives, answered

What are cascading objectives?

Cascading objectives are goals that flow down an organisation. A company or department objective is broken into objectives for each team, and those are broken into personal objectives for individuals, so everyone can see how their work contributes to the bigger goal.

How does the cascading objectives builder work?

Describe your goal in a few words and pick a niche if you like. The builder uses AI to work out whether it is a company, department or team goal, then builds three levels: the top objective, three or four objectives that deliver it, and two or three personal objectives under each, all with measures, targets and due dates.

What is the difference between company, department and team objectives?

Company objectives describe outcomes for the whole organisation, such as revenue or growth. Department objectives are owned by one function, such as sales or HR. Team objectives are narrower and often shorter-term. Personal objectives are owned by individuals and roll up to their team or department.

Are cascading objectives the same as OKRs?

They work well together. OKRs pair an objective with measurable key results. Cascading is how those objectives are aligned from the top of the organisation down to individuals. The builder gives every team objective key results and every person a measurable target.

How many objectives should each person have?

Three to five objectives per person is plenty. More than that dilutes focus. Each objective should be specific, measurable and agreed with the person in a one-to-one rather than simply assigned.

Is the builder free?

Yes. Building a cascade is free and needs no sign-up. If you want the full branded PDF plan with every measure, target and due date, enter your details and we will download it and email you a copy.
